1. DL, NDL, FL.The Original Dolch List (DL) has served as a foundation for elementary education for nearly 100 years. All elementary schools, English as a Second Language (ESL) schools, and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) schools in the U.S. use either the Original Dolch List (DL), or the New Dolch List (NDL), or Fry List (FL) or combinations. These lists overlap significantly and together cover 95% of words used in basic communications and texts.
2. GSL, New-GSL, NGSL-S. The General Service List (GSL), New General Service Lists (New GSL), New General Service List Spoken (NGSL-S) were developed primarily for adult learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Some educators use GSL, while others use New-GSL, NGSL-S and their combinations. These lists overlap significantly and together cover 99% of words in basic and non-basic communications and texts. The Dolch List was created in 1936. The New Dolch List was created about 100 years later and is an expanded version of the Dolch List , designed to reflect the changeing language to include new words (e.g. related to computers and Internet).
3. NAWL, TSL, BSL, FEL. The New Academic Word List (NAWL 1.01, 1.2), Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) Service List (TSL 1.1, 1.2), Business Service List (BSL 1.01, 1.20), Fitness English List (FEL 1.01, 1.20) were developed primarily for adult learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Some educators still use the original version (1.1), while others use the more recent version (1.2). The NAWL lists reflect modern academic language and provide learners of English with the vocabulary needed for success in academic settings. The TSL lists cover words used in the TOEIC English proficiency test (widely recognized globally and commonly used for job applications, promotions, or academic purposes). The BSL lists cover words commonly used in business and service-related industries. The FEL lists cover words commonly used in the fitness and wellness industries.
4. MNL The Merged Nursing List (MNL) is the result of merging three lists: Nursing Academic Word List (NAWL), Nursing Vocabulary List (NVL) and Nursing Collocation List (NCL). This list covers 95% of all nursing words (including 99% of terms required to pass the U.S. nurse licensure exam).
U.S. Nurse Licensure Exam. This exam may take place in testing centers in the U.S. and 23 other countries (e.g. Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom). In 2026, candidates will be able to take this exam online by webcam. There are multiple dedicated exam preparation companies in many countries and online.
U.S. Nurse's License. This license is automatically recognized in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Qatar, and the United Kingdom. This license is also recognized upon formal evaluation in almost all other countries in the world.
Job and Immigration Opportunities for U.S. Licensed Nurses. A registered nurse may obtain a U.S. green card (usually within a few months), which оffers (among other privileges) the privilege to reside, work, study (usually free), and apply for citizenship in the U.S.. There has been an acute shortage of nurses in the U.S. for decades. Many U.S. healthcare facilities are looking for licensed nurses. These institutions have nurse recruiting offices in many countries. The healthcare facilities are responsible for all the costs. U.S. nurses usually make over $10,000/month (plus health insurance and other benefits). Also, to attract nurses from overseas, many other countries (e.g. Australia, Denmark, Germany) offer nurses a variety of job and immigration opportunities (with attractive salaries, benefits, and large relocation packages).
COMPARISON OF LEARNING SPEEDS
Example 1. It normally takes 5 years (pre-K, K, grades 1, 2, 3) for American children to memorize all 315 words of the original Dolch List . It normally takes 8 years for American children to memorize all 1,000 words of the Fry List . Using this website, children can easily remember all the words from both lists over a period of several days to several weeks to several months (depending on the hours spent and individual characteristics).
Example 2. It normally takes a year and more for adults to memorize all 2,284 words of the GSL or 2,494 words of NEW-GSL.
By using this website, adults can easily memorize all words from both lists over a period of several days to several weeks to several months (depending on the hours spent and individual characteristics).
It is equally important that, unlike the traditional process of memorization, memorizing words on this site occurs automatically, without any psychological stress or effort on the part of the student. Just look at the word, enter it, press the button, and repeat as needed.
WHY TO LEARN THE MOST COMMON WORDS
1. In basic everyday oral and written communication, having a vocabulary is not only necessary but also sufficient to (1) speak, (2) understand speech, (3) read, (4) understand what is read, (5) write. For the basic communication level, it is not essential to study phonetics (pronunciation rules), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure). All that is required is a certain amount of vocabulary (lexicon).
2. According to research, while there are hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions of words in the English language, 1-2 thousand of the most common words cover approximately 90-95% of everyday oral and written communication and Internet texts. The remaining 5%-10% of the information can be easily understood from the context. Thus, more than 99.99% of the entire dictionary contains almost unused words.
